According to the NBKR, Kyrgyzstan received $1.6 billion in remittances in the first half of 2026, 78% from Russia and 9% from Kazakhstan. For hundreds of thousands of families this is the main income, and a 1–2% difference in fees means thousands of som a year. Here is which channels work in September 2026 and which is best.

Transfer systems

  • Zolotaya Korona: 0–1% fee when sending in roubles, cash payout in som at 900 locations or to a card. The conversion rate is 1–1.5% worse than the NBKR rate.
  • Unistream and Contact: 1–1.5%, payout at Optima Bank, Aiyl Bank and Bakai Bank branches.
  • Phone-number transfers via the Russian fast payment system to an Elcard: 0% fee, credited within a minute, limit 150,000 roubles a day. Works at MBank, Optima, Demir and Bakai.
  • From Kazakhstan: Kaspi → Elcard and Visa cards of Kyrgyz banks by phone number, 0–0.5%, limit 1 million tenge a month.

Where money is lost

The main loss is not the fee but the rate. On a 50,000-rouble transfer the difference between the system's rate (1.055 som per rouble) and the bank's exchange rate (1.073) is 900 som. It pays to receive the transfer in roubles on a multi-currency card and exchange in the app when the bank's rate is better: Demir and KICB offer a rate 0.5% better than the branch when exchanging online.

The second loss is cash withdrawal: foreign-issued MIR cards carry a 2–3% fee, while Russian transfers to an Elcard have no restriction and withdrawal at your own bank is free.

What to keep in mind

  • Transfers above 500,000 som a month require stating the source of funds under the anti-money-laundering law.
  • The recipient must own the account: banks return transfers to someone else's card.
  • System rates change several times a day — compare before sending.
