The average salary in Bishkek according to the National Statistics Committee for July 2026 is 41,800 som, and a family with two earners brings in about 80,000 som. Yet 68% of families surveyed by FinMarketKG say they cannot save. Here is how the 50/30/20 rule works at Kyrgyz prices and where money usually leaks.

What 50/30/20 means

Half of income goes to essentials: housing, food, transport, utilities, loan payments. 30% goes to wants: cafés, clothes, entertainment, gifts. 20% goes to savings and early debt repayment. For 80,000 som that is 40,000 / 24,000 / 16,000.

Essentials: 40,000 som

  • Renting a one-bedroom flat in Jal, or utilities for your own: 18,000 som (or 4,500 som of utilities if you own).
  • Groceries for two: 14,000 som shopping at Osh Bazaar and Globus.
  • Transport: 2,400 som for minibuses and Tulpar, or 8,500 som for petrol.
  • Phone and internet: 1,600 som.
  • Medicines and household goods: 2,000 som.

If you own your home, essentials drop to 26,000 som and the spare 14,000 can go to savings.

Where money leaks

Analysis of FinMarketKG users' transactions shows three main holes: food delivery (an average of 6,800 som a month for families under 35), subscriptions and mobile games (1,900 som) and small purchases at corner shops at inflated prices (up to 3,500 som of overpayment). Halving delivery alone frees up 3,400 som — a quarter of the savings target.

Where to put the 16,000

For the first 6 months, into an 11–12% savings account (Optima, MBank) until the cushion reaches 240,000 som. Then into a 16–17% one-year deposit. Over 5 years, 16,000 som a month at 15% with compounding becomes 1.4 million som — a down payment on a flat under the state mortgage. Build your own plan in the FinMarketKG deposit calculator.
