Every month, residents of Kyrgyzstan lose money by responding to "guaranteed loan" ads in messaging apps and social media. Fraud schemes are getting more sophisticated, and fake microfinance organization websites are now almost indistinguishable from real ones. Let's break down the warning signs that can help you spot a scam before money leaves your account.
Main signs of a fraudulent loan
- A demand to pay "insurance," a "processing fee," or "tax debt repayment" before receiving the money
- A promise to approve 100% of applications with no credit history check via "Ishenim" and no documents
- Communication only through messaging apps (WhatsApp, Telegram) with no official website or legal address
- The organization is absent from the NBKR or State Financial Supervision registry
- Pressure to decide "right now," with threats that the offer will disappear within an hour
- A request to transfer money to an individual's card rather than to the organization's official account
Legitimate MFOs and banks never take money from a client before disbursing a loan — any prepayment for "processing," "card activation," or "insurance against rejection" is a 100% sign of fraud.
How to check an organization
All legally operating microfinance organizations in Kyrgyzstan — Salym Finance, Mol Bulak, OXUS, Eleet-Kapital, Tez Akcha, Akcha Online, Nur Credit, Zaim.kg, MoneyMan KG, and others — are listed in the NBKR registry. Before submitting an application or transferring money, check the regulator's official website to confirm the company actually holds a license under the name shown in the ad. Scammers often use a name similar to a real MFO with a small spelling difference — that's worth checking carefully too.
What to do if you've already transferred money
If a transfer has already been made, contact the bank that processed the payment immediately and file a fraud report — sometimes the transfer can still be blocked if the recipient hasn't processed it yet. In parallel, file a police report with screenshots of the correspondence and the account details the money was sent to attached. The chances of recovering the funds depend on how quickly you act — the sooner, the better.
What real loan terms look like in Kyrgyzstan
For comparison: legal MFOs charge 0.5–2% per day, and many companies offer a completely free first loan for new clients — at 0% for a short term. Bank cash loans are issued at 16–32% per year. If an offer promises a "loan with no interest, forever" or claims to be "10 times better than any bank," it's almost certainly a scam — legitimate organizations operate within economically justified rates and cannot offer terms significantly below market.
How to protect yourself in advance
Before taking out a loan, it's better to compare terms from verified MFOs and banks on FinMarketKG, which lists only organizations with a valid license. It takes a bit more time than responding to an ad in a messenger, but it protects you from losing money and dealing with unnecessary problems.
